Hey shitheads, I found this bag of fireworks in the men's restroom...
I think we need to have more 3-way discussions about stuff. Texts are great for short questions and shit, but there's a lot of stuff that two of us have discussed that the third has been left out of. If there's any less specific thoughts or questions, more open ended stuff about the general direction of what were doing or shit like that, post it here. When I'm on break in July we should all get together.
Just to make our lives slightly less confusing, please use parenthesized descriptions of files if there are several for the same song. (i.e. updated mixes, ZIP files of new tracks, etc)
As far as where we are in the creative process, I want to write all the songs like we've been doing. (Recording shit, figuring out what fits where, etc.) However, after we have arrangements that sound right and complete, I want to go take some time and really learn the songs. Play along with them a lot as opposed to just recording an 8-bar loop on the fly and using that in the finished product as we used to. I'm not opposed to using loops, but I know for most of my guitar stuff I can make it sound way more expressive if I play the song a lot and get a feel for the songs dynamics and shit. After we're really in tune with the songs and have been playing along with the demos I'd like to go back and re-record stuff. Not necessarily everything, but wherever it makes sense. I think it'll breath a lot more life and nuance into it and reduce roboticality and sloppiness (although stylistic sloppiness is cool.) It should also give us time to set the songs aside after they're written so we can get them out of our heads and come back to them with fresh ears for the final recordings.
I don't want to rush anything as was the case with pretty much everything Psychodevilia recorded. I think we've all leveled up to the point where we can take our time without dragging the process beyond the point where we're no longer feeling the spark that ignited the songs. I think we can probably have something fucking awesome done by the end of the year.
All that being said, let's discuss what exactly it is we're creating.
From what has come forth thus far everything seems to have a pretty cohesive feel. There are some songs that stand out, but I don't see any impossible fits.
Although I think it's something to be decided once we have more arrangements completed, the thought popped into my head to do several EP's rather than albums (each with its own personality.) Let's face it, the Psaga was tooo fucking long. Just because you have 80 minutes on a CD doesn't mean you should use them; there are starving children in India with no minutes. I've noticed that there are a lot of albums that I have where I don't really know any of the songs after the first half-hour. I burn multiple EP's on to the same disc if they'll fit, and then I'll listen to the later tracks more, probably because there's a significant change half way through. All that's not really important for the moment.
As far as the aesthetic I think we're moving in a very good direction. I want to avoid any pretentious bullshit. If the song isn't expressing anything it's wrong. No stupid last minute whims like the shitty take of Self-Destruction. I want to make honest music. That's what will make me feel some sort of fulfillment and I think that's what will grab people. I want to try to retain a lot of intimacy, which isn't to say we can't sound disassociated. I'd like to avoid software instruments as much as possible, I'm using them a lot for writing and shit, but original tones with original imperfections create a much more real and personal sound. I'm going to try to get as much of the drum stuff recorded originally. Obviously some places will call for electronic drums and thats fine, but everyone and their fucking mom (no offense Fred) uses the Apple drum kits. You've heard them before, they will have heard them before. Let's not sacrifice uniqueness where we don't need to. I know several tight drummers who I'm going to call upon. My drummer already heard some of the songs and he's down. I'd like to get as much piano recorded originally too. I'd like to avoid choir patches, they all sound like shit, 2 or 3 real voices will sound way better. For the little bit we'll use strings or woodwinds or random obscure instruments I don't really care.
As I said, I think we're moving the right way. The first time I heard Marco I got the lyrics and I could relate. The lyrics for overture really fucking work too. I listened to Overture and Letting Go back to back the other day and I got the idea to put in a recurring motif with the weird polyrhythm thing going on. I don't want to make it too obvious though.
Oh, and project names...
I don't want to decide on a name until we have a better idea of where this is going or whatever, but here are some:
Broseph Stalin
Clearcoat Graffiti
Hallucinateurs (maybe better for a psychadelic band)
My Shadow Was Cool (the phrase just came up in conversation the other day)
(some sort of phonetic pronounciation of Nietzsche, although that might be even more dumb and confusing than psychodevilia)
That's all for now I suppose.

Re: Hey shitheads, I found this bag of fireworks in the men's restroom...
yeah i don't really want a joke name, but possibly something with an ironic "heh" to it
Re: Hey shitheads, I found this bag of fireworks in the men's restroom...
i never thought of anagramming psychodevilia, theres got to be hundreds of possibilities there
Re: Hey shitheads, I found this bag of fireworks in the men's restroom...
LOLz
also I was contemplating a better, more explodey version of this as anal bum cover
the album would have to be titled "copyrights are for pussies"
maybe ill just make it into a poster for my own amusement

I'm a fan of Physical Video, even despite the anagramness of it.
other than that, i have nothing new to add yet, just that i agree with everything.

yeah Physical Video is pretty cool
it kinda sounds like it could be some real future thing, like video come to life
I think if we do this again we should again change the name to another anagrammation
